    I'd suggest the Jacobite Trilogy by D. K. Broster as well as the Tranter books.

    And on a completely different note another lifelong favorite is Seal Morning by Rowena Farre. That made a deep impression on me from my early teen years.

    Wasn't that the series of 3 books about Robert the Bruce? Written by a couple of his decendents? Rebel King if I remember right.
