Not going to be an issue. I wear mine around the City pretty often, and have never had a problem In fact, the only problem I've ever had was with a loud-mouth over in Tiburon, of all places...the LAST place in California I'd expect to have an issue.

Mind you, in four years of kilt=wearing I've had exactly two unpleasant experiences here in the Bay Area, and literally hundreds of good ones.

I was in San Francisco in Mid may (not kilted -- bad me) and I saw 3 kilts in one day, two on the street and one shop keeper in a hardware/craft type store. I was bumed that I decided not to wear my kilt that day. San Fran is accepting and supportive of almost everything that you might chose to wear.

On an un-kilt note: The coolest thing I ever saw in S.F. was a guy walking down Market Street wearing a long scarf that he was still knitting (the yarn was in his back pack, and he was walking, wearing and knitting -- it seemed like some sort of metaphor for life).

As others have said, there are usually far stranger things to be seen on the streets of SF then a man in a kilt. You won't have any problems anywhere in Coastal California. WalkerK and I work in the city, so if you are going to be in town during the week, we ought to try to hook up.

    Best regards,

Grew up going to HS near naked guy. Only saw him once though....startled the poop out of me!

It was one of those things where you walk past, stop in your tracks, do a double take, look behind.....and you still dont believe what you just saw....kind of like some people's reactions to kilts

I have been kilted there tons of times. It is EXTREMELY kilt friendly! And it has the perfect weather for it!

Most of the fun visiting San Francisco is the people watching!
You can wear anything you want and nobody minds. I cannot imagine kilt wearing would be a problem. I very much enjoy my visits to the city... I went to High School in the Bay Area, and still return there to visit family.
    Enjoy your trip!

I'm back from Frisco and indeed it is a most tolerant city. It is also one of the coldest cities I've ever been in in July!. I had packed for 90/100 degree days which was ok for Napa, but when we got to S.Francisco I froze. I ended up having to buy a fleece jacket. It was really funny as you could really tell who the tourists were. There were all wearing hooded SanFrancisco sweatshirts or SanFrancisco fleece jackets. I wore my kilt several times but found that the high wind made it alittle risky. The only other kilted fellow I saw was a lad in a Gordon kilt in a small Scottish store on Sutter Street. He had never heard of XMARKSTHESCOT poor lad. I got nothing but admiration from all who saw me and I will try to post some pictures. Alcatraz was something anyone going to S.F. should not miss.
