Good. I'll go to a shop to try a strap but personally I like chains

I'd say what you are looking at there is a Semi Dress Sporran, for casual wear think leather. It is also a good idea to use a leather sporran strap instead of a chain with a casual sporran, for a few reasons, first chains can catch the wool and therefore damage the kilt whereas the leather belt would not. Secondly a chain is just a bit too much bling for a casual outfit most of the time. Depending on the budget I'd say the following sporrans are your best bet.

    1. Freelander Sporran

I absolutely love mine and it really is my go to sporran it will hold anything I need for a day out, so long as I remember to put it in the sporran.

Although I do not own one, many here do, I've heard a lot of good things about them and they do have the same look as the one from ebay but are a higher quality.

    3. Buzz Kidder Rob Roy

Again I do not have one of these but I've heard nothing but good things about about them.

There are other options out there including ebay but those would be the best that I could come with. I should think you would be happy with any of the options above.

I have one of these and believe it was money well spent. I'm very satisfied with mine.

I inevitably wear one of three sporrans: deer hide with a brass cantle; full mask muskrat; silver mounted seal skin. Only the seal skin is on a chain, the other two are on straps. Why? probably because they came that way. Does it matter? Probably not. About 90% of all sporrans sold are on chains, and I'd bet that 100% of those rented are also on chains. My guess is that chains are a more economical proposition for sporran makers to supply with a sporran.

Is one more "correct" than the other?

    No.

It's really a matter of personal preference, if one can be bothered to think of it at all.

Getting past the anecdotal "chains will chew up your kilt," let me contribute an eyewitness account. My sister purchased an expensive, decorative Saltire-pattern chain for her husband. I've seen the hole it tore in his kilt. So it's not just rumor, and it's not just the cheap rental chains.

Leather straps are very common--and popular--for daywear. Those chrome chain straps are rather harsh looking when worn with casual dress. If you look at many of the pics on this forum, you will note that many, many gentlemen prefer leather straps.

I went for the second one I found... I like most of the sporrans people have posted but this one had a simplistic edge

And therein lies the real answer. Personal preference.

Some gentlemen prefer metal straps, some gentlemen (me included) prefer leather straps.
