I've been in the service for 27 years, have visited 43 countries, served with the US Army in Desert Storm, the USN in numerous exercises and doing boardings in the Persian Gulf to enforce UN sanctions, served with the USMC 51st MEU in Riymadi. I have worn a kilt (authorized in USCG Uniform Regulations) to formal functions, balls, etc. and have never met a military member who didn't know about kilts. Must have been young or a reserve?

I think you hit it on the head, young. There could be another explaination, the potluck was an AA meeting and the airman had just got his 60 day chip, at 60 days I was still rather dingy, and said stuff that didn't make a lot of sense. Heck, I still say things that don't make sense!

"Well yes they are, very comfortable, I'm surprised you have never seen a kilt, they are fairly popular with the militaries of the world", "Really? I guess I've never been stationed where they would be part of the uniform" At this point his wife grabbed him and took him away. I've been in company of lots of military guys, and I have never got this one before, never seen a kilt before at all?

Is this common? I mean never? Or perhaps the guy leads a really sheltered life?
I think he was having you on.

Or as the folks across the pond might say: "taking the p*ss." I agree -- there was something strange about that scene -- my only other explanation would be that he was already completely soused and carried it well... Again, his wife obviously knows him very well and she dragged him off before he could make a bigger fool of himself.
