I like my shiny buckle for only extra dressy occasions because I like the way it goes with my sporran chain. For any time other than a wedding or formal affair, I wear a sporran strap and dull buckle.

Alan,
Keep that shiny buckle for formal affairs and buy yourself a nice pewter one for other events.
A fellow I know in the Nor Cal Rabble has about 4 buckles now he rotates through his one black belt to achieve the right look for a variety of outfits and situations...

I use a product called Goof Off to take the glue off price tags, the brand names off metal products, ink off anything, etc. I bet it would take the shine off that evil buckle.
It is the second most noxious product I've used, after an industrial drain cleaner, so if you're sensitive to stuff, stick to steel wool. (It smells like ultra concentrated felt pens.)

Have a look at the fredonline321 store on ebay. Some good deals on not so shiney buckles going on there.

I prefer Antique finish over Chrome myself. Almost all the buckles I sell are available in either finish (for the same price).

For me - that's one of the best stores on ebay for anything to do with kilts. Their sporrans are good quality and are extremely cheap - and they have a sale on at the moment.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

I have the same buckle as Nighthawk only I had mine Gold Plated. ( Santa's mostly wear Gold or Brass Trims) You need to be careful when you try to sand on the chrome as a custom bike builder I know a lot about chrome. By sanding it if you then don't put some sort of clear coat on it most likely it will rust.

I think Santa is right on this one. Chrome plating is often too thin to sand down and still last well.
The good news Alan, this might be a sign of good taste on your part. Unfortunately, most Scottish belt buckles sold on this side of the pond are quite shinny. But as others have pointed out, pewter, brushed, antiqued or even brass are available if one looks a little harder. As for me, the next time I see a brass buckle that I like, it is mine.

I scored a brass buckle and stamped celtic-design brown kilt belt...it was a "second" though I can't find any flaw...from Stillwater a few years ago and I absolutely love it. I actually changed the straps on my MacNaughton poly-vis kilt to match the belt. I have brass colored kilt strap buckles, too...just gotta install them.
BTW, this shiny chrome belt buckle is a Stillwater. It's a great deal for the money, my tastes just changed.
