Skauwt, a stroke of good luck! We ladies are lucky when it comes to kilted skirts being way less dear than kilts. I have gotten three beauties from ebay for $15 to 50.
Mipi, your remake of a skirt looks like a kilt-- beautifully done. Box pleats, gentlemen, and it can be done.

I reckon that the gender of a kilt being determined by the order in which the aprons close is about as silly as men being allowed to wear only trousers. Surely the fit of the garment and general "look" (masculine or obviously feminine) are the things that matter.
Having said that, I wouldn't want to wear the wrong 'gender' kilt in Scotland. However, I might do it with a great kilt, as I've heard that you can close the aprons either way with one of those. But seeing there are no buckles sewn on a great kilt, I'd probably close it left over right. And right over left if, for some reason, I was doing something messy in it.
