Agreed. This new version is definitely better looking and what I'd call a kilt.
As for material, I agree with Highrise. Merino rocks! Love my merino sweater for hiking, warm when it gets cold and keeps you cool when it's warm (to a point, don't want it to be too hot).

The industry veteran in me is wondering if the guy who snapped the picture was escorted off the trade show floor.... it used to be that you couldn't even carry a pencil and sketch pad into the Salt Palace during the OR conventions.

We're in the age of the cell phone camera now.

The second is closer to a kilt while the first one is definitely a skirt IMO. That guy in the top pic looks like a lady at first glance and indeed second (alright a not a good looking one)
I think they have a ways to go yet before I order one. A crisp defined pleat at least rather than a saggy baggy wrinkled one like in the bottom picture. It isn't my taste not being traditional, but I am the first to admit some UK etc have a kilt look, which is sharp and clean cut, this looks sloppy and cheap.

I agree with you about the pleats. I can't imagine that thin nylon could ever be made to hold a crisp, defined pleat. This is one of those kilt like garments that's totally purpose built and not meant for fashion in any way. That's probably the reason it didn't even have pleats for so long. I'd never own one as it's not for me (there are much better looking contemporary kilts out there), but it's cool to see a major well respected outdoor gear company making a kilt-ish thing. I'd bet it's extremely comfortable when hiking in the summer.

YES... I would wear it, not the first one though, there isn't any pleats and it looks like a skirt...
BTW........I love the Chacos!

I have had the new version kilt for six months now and it wears much better than the old for my rather long stride. The "modesty snap" that is supposed to hold the inner apron to the rear pleats for climbing comes unsnapped at the first raise of a knee to climb. My Large fits loose on my 34" waist, and has ample room to get over my 40" hips. Mountain Hardwear's conical waist design is present in this garment as has been in their shorts. The pleats allow for my rather long stride far better than the shorts or version one - version one was better than shorts BTW. Think of version one as a very generous A-line skirt. My version one developed sort of gathers from wear and while sitting. The only gripe I have is the "side pockets" do not really sit equally on the side but are slightly to the rear, making the contents bounce and twist off the thighs when walking briskly. The 21.75" length is a bit short for a kilt on me (usual 27"), but will work if I let it sit low on the hips.
