Are you serious? Nov 11TH is Veterens Day, where do you live that the VFW does not sell lapel poppies for this day? Perhaps because I am Military I have never seen a Veterens Day without men & women wearing poppies here in the US or even when on bases stationed overseas. This US wearing and selling of :
The Story of the Symbolic Poppy

The poppy seed can lie for years before it spouts nodding buds and then blooms four crumpled petals. It is a vivid mix between red and orange in color. These simple flowers grew en mass over the grave sites on the Western Front. They soon became a symbol associated with Veterans.

In the 1920’s people began selling paper poppies made to look like the wildflower. This provided assistance to ex-servicemen and their families. Today, the donations help build housing for seniors and support groups such as Meals-on-Wheels. People buy them to show their support for soldiers and their families. You will probably see someone selling them on Veterans Day, so help out if you can and wear your poppy proudly.

Thanks to all! I've got a good source with which I am quite pleased.

When I was little, and a member of the Junior American Legion, we made poppies for the Legion members to sell / give for a donation. I can still remember twisting the crepe paper around the wire. Try the American Legion. I'm sure they can hook you up.

As SFCRick said, poppy seeds can lie dormant for years. Then they tend to spring into life when the soil is disturbed. Every inch of Flanders fields was disturbed by exploding shells, then when it was over the battlefield was quickly covered with a mass of red poppies, which is why the poppy was chosen as the symbol of remembrance.

I buy poppies every year but there have been two years since I have been in the US that I have been unable to find any.

I always purchase mine, from Veteran's of Foreign Wars. It is harder to find them selling them.. they used to be at every supermarket around Veteran's Day, and Memorial Day. The last one I actually purchased at the Niagara Celtic Festival, last month.. the Veterans of Foreign War have a booth there.
Nowadays most stores and malls do not allow peddlers in front of their stores (such as Salvation Armies, boy/girl scouts and NFP's).

Wow, up here in Canada, we seem to have one story of a legionaire selling poppies being told to go away. But then we seem to have a media S***storm over it and the store backs down in a hurry.
