I think Rollo meant "bow tie is rather exceptional." ...black or white ! No one even makes the difference between the two types of events !
But I may add that even a dressy look is rather exceptional. Now a day, I'm often the only one wearing a tie at weddings or funerals.
Last time, there was myself and a 78 years old gentleman. His wife came up to congratulate me... for wearing a simple tie. No more ties on television. Even our politics are putting it aside.
Dressing formalities seem to be well alive in anglo-saxon countries. In France people will rather look at your watch to make sure it's an expensive one ...
