Thank you for reviving this thread, Ian. Thanks also to David H for the information on septs.
My father's family is full of lines which became extinct - he had a number of aunts called White who never married, due to the lack of men here in the UK after the Great War, and they lived together all their lives.
As the oldest of my generation I met the last two sisters, and suspect that there is noone else in the family still here to remember them.

Ian-I've seen that clip many times and each time it bring a tear or two to my eyes.
SAMS serve as the Color Guard for the local Highland Games every year.
I approched them about joining since I figured with 9 years in the Army National Guard (Staff Sgt.) and my paternal gramdmother was a Lewis (Lewis of MacLeod) I'd be welcomed with opened arms. The "gentleman" at the SAMS table told me that if I didn't serve any active duty time not to bother about joining. (I hope he was just having a bad day and didn't want to talk with anyone and was speaking out of hand)
That was 4 years ago and still bothers me- Last several games SAMS had a table up with flyers and such but no one at the table for me to talk to.

From the SAMS membership page on their Nat'l website:
Membership is open to honorably discharged veterans or active duty or reserve military persons who have served or are serving with any branch of the US Armed Forces. Membership is open to:
*Present or former Regular or Reserve members of the US Armed Forces.
*Individuals who have been discharged or released from duty must not have
received a less than honorable discharge.
*Cadets of any of the Armed Service Academies or college level ROTC
*Spouses, widows, or widowers of any of veterans or Service Academy/ROTC
cadets.
*Members of the British Commonwealth Armed Forces
I hope this helps.
p.s. -- I'm a former SAMS member. I had to cut back on most of my association memberships due to $$$

Muffinman, I believe they muster at most every Arizona Highland Games. See their tent all the time at Phoenix.
Not sure, but they might be at the Camp Verde, AZ games on the 27th of this month. You could drive up and check. A small but fun Highland games.

Scottish veterans in Houston?
Thanks for the compliments on our website, www.samspost1943.org. I've added some more material to it since my last post here. Definitely check it out and tell me what you think.
I'm moving to Houston and I was wondering if there are any Scottish veterans in the area that would like to charter a post?

Creating Opportunities to Wear the Kilt
I wanted to make sure that Xmarks members with military experience consider joining the Scottish American Military Society because it is a good group that promote Scottish heritage and traditions as well as military customs and courtesies. And best of all, it provides Xmarks members more opportunities to wear the kilt with other members in the public eye. I would like to extend the invitation to check out my post's website to any and all Xmarks members, regardless of military background, just to see what we're doing. I have included links to SAMS posts around the States, so come check it out.

Plus, if you are interested in having military honors at your funeral, we place that as a high priority and will find a piper for you.

honoring vets
Thanks for keeping this thread alive. I would not have seen it otherwise. I like the website. Folk in my family were fighting Romans along what's now the Borders. My gggg-grandfather, his father, uncle and first cousin were farmers in Wilkes County, GA by 1773 and all 4 served the Continental Line in GA and the Carolinas. My grandfather (cavalry, Mexican Border, Phillippines, WWI) and an uncle (Korea) died in the VA hospital in Dublin, GA. A great-uncle (WWI) spent 65 years in and out of Mountain Home, TN, there when he couldn't function, working when he could. At a cousin's (Viet Nam, African conflicts) funeral I was attempting to thank the color guard and bugler for making the long drive, the bugler said, "Son, the man's wearing 17 medals. Multiple Purple Hearts, multiple Silver Stars, a Bronze Star, and medals from countries in Africa I didn't know we fought in. It's MY honor and privilege to be here. He's EARNED this."
Your website addresses all their situations. Thanks for the work you do. I know first hand how much this means to the families to have men who also
put themselves in harm's way still choose to serve as volunteers at funerals
and at the hospitals.
To all members of SAMS and other vets, thank you for your service, before
AND after discharge.
