If I was going to wear a jacket then I would go for the tie as well. Otherwise I would go with a nice sweater.

Yes Bill... I often do that to informal events where I'm sure a few other people will be wearing shirts without ties. When I get to these events I normally take my jacket off right away anyway.
    Just wear whatever feels right!

I wear my tweed jacket with a open fress shirt often and it seems to work well. I like wearing a fine silver chain at my throat to indicate that I am choosing to wearing the shirt sans tie instead of me having misplaced my neckwear!

I have been like The Scot's suggestion of the turtleneck very much.

It is a classy yet informal look.

    Cheers

Sure you can wear a tweed jacket without a tie. Sometimes it looks good; soetimes not. It really depends. I'll eschew a necktie occasionally for dinner at home, when I'm kilted.

Here is an old pic of the late Lord Lovat, sans necktie. I'd hate to be the one to call him out on it!

THAT is a great picture. Note well, based on the position of the pocket flaps, his jacket seems to have been shortened from a "regular" sport coat. Also, check out the wear / repair on the front of his kilt. That is a man who got his money's worth.

Lord Lovat demonstrates exactly why most of us prefer the tie with the jacket. Being a lord does not im pute good taste.

Of course, when you're a good looking guy to start with, you can lose the tie, wear a beat up kilt, and still successfully chat up the chicks. Even with all those patterns being so busy.

I just love that picture of the late Lord Lovat! It shows perfectly just how to wear the kilt etc. in a very informal way, just knocking around home.OK he had the advantage of having several wardrobes full of assorted kilt attire of various age and repair!Nevertheless a perfectly normal state of kilt attire in Scotland in the right setting.

Super photo and I detect in it something else pertinent to the original question. If you're comfortable and confident in your own skin, you're going to project the same whatever you wear. So if you can walk out of the door in the jacket sans tie without a second thought, you'll be fine. If you're going to feel self-conscious wearing the jacket without a tie, don't do it.

I've learned that it's probably best not to wear the black argyll without a tie, but it seems okay to me to wear a tweed jacket without a tie.

    Hi All

That picture of Lord Lovat is a grand one! My wife tells me that the jacket has a pattern to it and looks a little busy but the whole thing comes off well.
The jacket I have has no pattern to it just plain dark grey. I deliberatly sought a jacket that would not clash with any of my kilts for daywear.

I have been enjoying the informative responses. Thanks! I look forward to hearing more.

    Slaint'
