I like the claymore sword pin. For more festive occations I put on a clan badge pin. I think the clan badge looks best, but that's just how I feel here in Norway with almost noone else in kilts.

I have a small collection of kilt pins from swords to ornate ones with stones which match the kilt and possibly the sgian dubh I wear at the time. It is a matter of choice. .... yours.

Robert MacDonald (of www.westcoastkilts.com) gives this advice on his page about kilt care:

"Kilt pins are the number one cause of irreparable damage to kilts. The front apron suffers a little bit of damage every time the pin is pushed through the cloth. Eventually the apron has two ragged holes which no power on earth can repair. If you feel that you MUST wear a kilt pin, mount it carefully by working the tip of the pin gently through the cloth and leave it there."

Based on this, I would say figure out what situations you will wear any particular kilt in and leave an appropriate kilt pin on more or less permanently. Eg. on my tank, I have a safety pin-style with a piece of purple stone on top that matches my purple stone topped, formal sgian. My Sportkilt has a plain steel safety pin and my casual wool kilt has a shamrock claymore that matches a shamrock belt buckle.

I don't wear a kilt pin. While I've seen may beautiful pins, I've never really found anything I like enough to wear. However, if you are considering purchasing a silver kilt safety pin, it would look appropriate no matter what the occasion. Just my two cents worth.

Well, good for you, I guess. I think it a learned behavior. I'm just saying...
