Yes, and MacLL was suggesting a way to determine the length of the jacket.

This is all far more confusing that I had anticipated. I might just ask Victoria to convert the jacket as she normally would
Well yes, that would be a good default action: Trust Victoria!

Everyone has been giving you slightly different views, triangulating on the same point: the line of your hip measurement on the kilt. Possibly we've just confused the issue for you (sorry!), so I will add one more to increase the obfuscation.

Depending on your build, the sleeves of your jacket probably come close to the fell line of the kilt. Draw an imaginary line across the jacket there, and another 2 inches higher.

If the hem of the jacket lies in that range, you'll be fine!

Farlander does raise a good point: when selecting a jacket, it's good to note where the buttons are in relation to your proposed sporran cut-away area.

Oh! Victoria is doing the conversion.

    Don't worry about it.

    * What were her instructions, by the way? I'm just wondering.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Between the waist of the kilt and where the stitches end on the pleats.

Glad to hear I'm in good hands...or at least my jacket is! I just put it in the mail this morning.

Victoria's patient instructions to this nervous and easily confused newbie were: Rather than measure, put the jacket on, then make a mark where you want the bottom of the jacket to be. Usually about the top of the hip bone, but I need at least 5 inches to make the sleeve gauntlets from.

Five inches up seems to actually be the magic number for me. It looks like it'll leave enough space below the pockets so they don't look absurdly low and give her enough material to work her magic with.
