I own a pair of Leak speakers which I bought second hand around 9 years ago. The original owner used to play The Beatles etc thru them when they were first around so that makes 'em at least 40 years old and still going strong.

I know what you mean. When I was in college, I fell in love with the spec sheet of the Crown pre-amp. Could not think about affording it at the time, but thanks to the brotherhood of Ebay gearheads, I now have two.

Ah, another vintage audio fan. Currently have some vintage gear myself. Only vintage stuff I'm currently using is a pair of Infinity RSa speakers from 1979. They're being powered by a Sony ES system from 1991-92. The other vintage items I have are a Dual 1009SK turntable and a couple Sony receivers from 1971-73 that both need work.

But my amp goes to 11.

Try Orange Glo wood cleaner. Works for me. Good luck and hope you have nice neighbors. I turned my speakers up once and the casement windows in my room fell out.

Hearing from you prompts me to consider something else.

I've often heard the opinion expressed that CD's have a different sound than LP's or tape...that CD's are somehow "colder" and vinyl is "warm".

Think that might just be an effect of the playback equipment going over to chips and smaller speakers instead of tubes/transistors and BIG SPEAKS?

The glaring difference is that most CD players, as used by most of us, have an output amp run by a nasty little integrated circuit manufactured by the firm that had the cheapest lots on a given day. There do exist audiophile CD players, with audiophile price tags. They are something else again!

I am not a Golden Ear, nor do I play one on the Internet; but I do have one really nice turntable (and a couple of inexpensive spares). My opinions on tubes versus solid approximate the phases of the moon.

I'm willing to believe that the inherently analog LP signal is perceptibly different than the CD, even if the rest of the signal path were as similar as possible. I even think that I can hear it, under some conditions. They're both good, but it doesn't matter unless someone is listening.
