I'm a piper, too, but I wear my kilt more often than you. I look for any Celtic event: Highland games; night out at the pub; church; etc. My 16 oz and heavier kilts don't lose their pleats sitting in the car or in a chair at the games. After competitions, instead of changing into jeans with pockets, switch to a larger sporran.

I'm a High School teacher also and feel that society unjustly places sticter regulations and ideas on us because of what we do and with whom we interact. But I am an individual who feels that rules are meant to be bent NOT broken. My kilt wearing in no way prevents or deters from properly performing my job and thank goodness I work with administrators who see a benefit to showing cultural diversity (wearing a klit).
I do not think anyone here will twist your arm into wearing a kilt more often than you do currently. We only express our own feelings about heritage, culture, and freedom through the wearing of a kilt. Some show these feelings more often, some less. Here is to the simple fact that you wear a kilt when playing the pipes. Good for you as I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.
BTW we have a sponsor/advertiser here on XMTS that makes kilts WITH pockets if you are son inclined.

I also am a piper. I wear a band kit at gigs, but when I'm out at social events I tend to use my clan tartan. I can't say I use my kilt more than once a week outside, but it is a way of expressing my heritage.

Some in my band will change before and after the gig. Some may even change because they feel uncomfortalbe/insecure when walking alone in a kilt.

For me it's natural to wear a kilt, but I only do it on special occations. You also show the world that you have a lot of selfesteem by wearing it. So get comfortalbe with it, and get a good sporran that will take all your rubbish. I actually feel that a sporran is more comfortable to wear than jeans with a lot of things in my pockets. (my humble oppinion)

I am a physician who works with children on a daily basis. I guess you could call me a "casual" or Hobby kilt wearer, although only one of my kilts is of the casual style and it still in tartan. I wear them when I can or want to but definitely far from daily, and only occasionally to work. I seek out opportunites to justify wearing the kilt to my wife (she is not a fan) so highland games, celtic festivals, special events, etc.. are my general opportunities besides the occasional around town or to work on weekends, and occasionally on weekdays when I am not clinical. Oh, and on the golf course.

Everybody here has their own reason for wearing the kilt and their own kilt wearing pattern for those reasons. You too will find yours over time.

Welcome from Michigan Wear the kilt when it is comfortable, as far as getting in and out of cars, and other odd or awkward moments do a search and try some of the suggestions. You might find it might help wearing the kilt easier. This is a great place to learn.

As someone who wears the Kilt almost every day I say this: Wear whatever you want. Seriously, if you are not comfortable wearing a Kilt more often than Piping that's no bad thing.
I find the Kilt more comfortable, but I was brought up wearing it so things like sweeping the pleats, sitting down in general etc are natural to me.
Sure, you could get a Kilt with pockets such as the ones made by Freedom Kilts, but no one here is going to force you to love it.

Just enjoy it when you wear it, that's all.

"Fanatical" is a bit harsh. Choosing to wear a kilt in casual/everyday situations is, IMHO, no different than choosing to wear pants. It's a preference thing. Most of the time I prefer the kilt to pants, so I'm out and about in a kilt a lot. When dealing with a sporran isn't practical I'll wear a UK. My fave is the Survival--heavy duty, pockets galore, and the most comfortable material of the standard UKs....

I also wear a kilt when performing (every show since I started wearing kilts), but I'm a guitar player. A couple of times before a show I've been asked, "Are you the bagpipe player?" "Aye, but tonight I'm rocking the guitar!"

Oh and... Welcome from the San Francisco Bay Area!

    Welcome aboard.

Wear it or don't, it's up to you. I doubt anyone will convince you. Frankly if you don' even wear it at the games with hundreds--or even thousands depending on the games--in kilts around you, well . . .
