I can't argue with you about the great contrast of the actual C of C tartan ( whose reds sometimes verge on a very cool hot pink ), but I don't dislike the dress MacKenzie, either. Rather than completely swapping out the background, as with Dress Stewart, this tartan more or less blows up an existing white stripe, from a narrow one to a series of wider ones, leaving everything else pretty much intact And it works well, really. You don't really lose the contrast of dark-to-bright, it just sits bordered by white.
