well, the Nostromo was from Alien, and they got hunted and subsumed/eaten . . . Argos and Galliott where from the vampire planet or something (I have very fond memories of that from when I was a kid on a Saturday afternoon), where they crash and dead bodies get possessed -- not sure how they are related. . . and although I know what Icarus and Bellerophon are from mythologically speaking, I don't know how they tie in here . . . more ships in the Alien sequels?

Sorry I'm late!
Venture is the ship that transports King Kong from Skull Island. (also a starship in Star Trek)
Rita is the boat in 'Creature from the Black Lagoon'
Bellerophon was the ship that stranded Walter Pidgen and Anne Francis on Altair 4 in 'Forbidden Planet'
Esherblacksmith is remembering right; Argos and Galliott are from the 1965 Italian Sci Fi epic 'Planet of the Vampires' , the basis for Alien.

It also refers to a story by Joseph Conrad. The Colonial Marine ship in Aliens, the USS Sulaco, was named for the mining town in Conrad's fictional South American country of Costaguana.

Good work Gentlemen (knew I count count on you Z )

The first list has been nailed
The third list had the theme
"Their mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before..and die horribly!"
(BTW, The Icarus is from Babylon 5, it is the research vessel that landed on Z'ha' Dum and awakened the Shadows. Needless to say this wasn't a great first contact experience)
As for the second list I am not familiar with the mobile Suit Gundam series but it seems that Zardoz's answer is valid. I would ask our Trek, BSG, manga, or B5 fans to take another look at the list and have another go.
Cheers

Apparently the other big influence / inspiration for Alien was the 50's SCi Fi flick IT: The Terror from Beyond Space. I have never gotten to see it sadly, I wonder if Netflix has it?

Don't forget the Nostromo's escape shuttle Narcissus, all the ships in Alien and Aliens were named after things in Conrad novels.

That was interesting Panache, but my sci fi memory isn't as good as my

Yep, if you mix the story and visuals of "IT" and 'Planet of the Vampires' add a little H.R.Giger, and you get Alien. No offense to the late Dan O'Bannon, he's the chef that made it work!

I think Icarus was a hovership in one of the Matrix films too, not sure.
