sgian dubh skills

I've done it many times with a dirk. I don't think a sgian would have enough weight.

It's really easy. Just slide the blade quickly down the seam and the collar pops right off. Make sure the champagne is chilled, though. if it's warm, there will be too much pressure.

As a veteran of many explosions...quite a few involving lots of flying glass...and a fan of sparkling wines, I'd seriously recommend just gently twisting the cork. One of the maitre d's here used to do the sabre thing and he used a sort of half-bladed job that looked like the one that Chuck Connnors character used to carry in the TV series "Branded". Very showy but, as Ancienne Alliance pointed out, a waste of good wine. If you absolutely must, go with the heavier blade and use a bottle of the cheap $#!+ for the big splash and then open something decent for to drink.

Not only can it be done with a sgian dubh, you can do it with a car key with practice. And boy, does that ever deflate the guy trying to impress everyone with his sabre.

BUT

Bottles have been known to shatter, inflicting serious cuts to the hand, including loss of fingers

so I wouldn't recommend trying this at home. Or any place else.

I'll keep this procedure in mind if I ever desire a need to inspect my champagne for glass shards...

I think I can be a lady when I want and it is going to take more than theatrics with a bottle and a blade and a drink of any kind to impress me. So just carry on about the how-tos of this (as it is interesting) and nevermind what is a worthy lady or not!
