Hey all,
I was actually denied permission to wear a kilt to my law enforcement academy graduation along similar lines. I believe the excuse was that it was "cultural" and therefore not "professional." The ironic part is that I was planning to wear a law enforcement memorial tartan. I must, instead, wear a standard suit and tie.

I wore a Nehru jacket to MY prom! (Which we stuffily called a 'Graduation Dance'- and which style statement may date me.) The overall effect must have been clerical, presumably due to the collar, because later when the parents were all gone I was asked to marry several people.

Ah, some folks still point out the splinter in one's finger, whilst sporting a log in their own eye. Been doin' if for a long time, too.

I think you mistake my irritation. I love the dress (which I guess I should have made more clear...) but it bothers me that that is OK and a kilt is not. As an artist, I think it's great, too.

Then we are in accord.

I agree that it is an interesting artistic work, but I think it has no place at a formal event.

Not intending to threadjack. ThinBlueLine, you said you were not allowed to wear a kilt to your Acadamy graduation because it was "cultural" and therefor not "professional"? The most recentgraduating classof the Contra Costa
County Sheriff Dept. had two Sikhs (turbans and all!). And I just read somewhere that a Sikh graduated from the U.S. Army NCO school [B]in his turban[B]. It doesn't get any more cultural than that but being denied wearing a kilt to a prom or a graduation. I don't get it.
We now return you to our regularly scheduled topic.

I saw that on the news this morning, wasn't sure what to think really. Capri-sun kilt?
I am finding it very hard to convince my principal from any standpoint or direction I take. But that doesn't mean I have given up, I still have my Senior year, and I'm either going to succeed or graduate trying.
With inner-city schools, more "Variety" is usually accepted, in rural areas, not so much, but I would not be surprised at all if my principal would be Ok with a Capri-Sun dress.
Thanks guys.

As long as YOU weren't wearing it...
But no, seriously. I love the dress and it's great that not only she had a supportive boyfriend and school, but that she was able to realize her creative and artistic abilities. I only wish others were able to do the same.
I also have no problem with duct tape outfits, or anything else... If I were a high school administrator, I would probably only enforce rules that had to do with public decency (like not allowing micro-mini, see-through, transparent, etc.etc.) But barring that... Hey, express yourself... If it makes you happy.

Hot niblets !!
You mean I'm blowing all that money getting my 15 yr old son fitted for a "James Bond" type black dinner-suit and white dress shirt when all I needed were a few black and white bin-liners from the supermarket ??
