And I can't believe your friend didn't wear his "special pants" (I'm assuming you're referring to bombacha - the Turkish-style ballooning pants that are the traditional wear of the Brazilian South). I lived in Southern Brazil for a while and those pants are nearly as comfortable as a kilt. I love mine.
