Does that blue DPM your kilt is made from have a name or designation, do you know?

In my dangerously tall and unstable pile of as yet unsewn kilts I have some fabric which looks very like it.

To the best of my knowledge it is "Blue Urban Camo". It was purchased from Barre Army Navy. I call it "Blue Meanie" and that is not a reflection of me!

I have seen both R-Kilts and Freedom Kilts products up close and personal and they are top-quality. Sydnie7 does good work, too.

You could also get your own fabric and make yourself an X-Kilt.

That fabric is certainly heavier than most - and it takes a lot of steam and effort to smooth it - one reason why it is still on the heap.

I have noticed that DPM comes in a wide range of weights and densities - where wool worsted comes in a range of weights the density of the fabric is about the same.

Some DPMs are noticeably cooler than others which are about the same weight, due to the looser weave.

There are also fabrics which are treated to be waterproof.

When buying fabric to make a kilt it usually pays to actually feel it, but with a DPM you really have to check it out to be sure of getting the right sort of weave and weight and fluidity for a good kilt.

One thing to take into account is that most DPM patterns are intended to be worn with the weft horizontal, not the warp as in tartan kilts. With a 60 inch wide fabric this can mean a saving in the amount of fabric you need to buy, though it does mean that the lower edge will need to be hemmed.

Ah, so that's why most of the tiger stripe and other "directional" camo fabric is printed perpendicular to the selvedge. Is there anything you don't know Pleater??

OP: Make your own!

Pleater: I didn't hem I've put a few strategic stiches in at either end of the apron and in various places in the pleats and accept a little bit of fraying - although there has been very little.
