Girls' Kilts

It seems to be far more important in the US that garments are differentiated male and female, must fold the right way - my son found that in the US even the zips in fleeces are put in so they have one fold from the right or the left, where here in the UK most are inserted evenly.

Kilts, like kimono, fold left over right in their native countries, but it would never do to embarass the girls if it would be wrong in their circles to wear a garment which was WRONG!!

In old British films women and girls wearing kilts have the kilt pin on the right, and the length seems to conform to the social norms - knees are not visible.

Having bought a wool/acrylic blend tartan fabric recently it is a coarser weave and stiffer than the pure wool, but it was far cheaper.

It is still ongoing, and whereas it isn't too bad where the stitching follows the grain, shaping the aprons is a struggle.

I can't just hammer in the shape like an all wool fabric would allow.

When it arrived it was obvious that it had been polished on one side by the pressing already done to it, - it must have been treated as wool, and the man made fibres do not like that at all.

I have cut it selvage to selvage so that the inside is now the right side, the polishing will be inside, and I am making a kilt from 20 ft of it, which I will wash and see how it looks then. If it is still stiff I can soften it by steaming, I hope.

Cheers for that. It makes me think that, as a journeyman, I might want to stick with wool for now.
