Yes, I know the Tartan becomes their Property. It is a tartan for my school so I really do not care.
If and I should, design a Tartan for my family, I would not use them so that I could keep the rights.
I actually believe that Nick (in another thread) said that one could pay a small fee to "buy back" the rights to a tartan designed using their online designer - so you could have it woven by Scotweb then buy the rights just in case you want to have a future run woven elsewhere.

Dear Cygnus, I can give you more than a ballpark figure for the pro-colour surcharges. I am having two of my registered designs woven right now by Scotweb and each pro-colour is 150 British pounds (approx. $230.00 U.S.). Their minimum order is 10 metres of fabric, or equivalent in tartan products. Coincidentally, the pro-colour I chose was "Mango-Tango" the same as Mindrop used here! Nice design, Mindrop, and I, too, like the narrower white stripe better. Please talk to Nick - you'll find he will be very reasonable and accommodating. ***Amble******

Thank you, Amble! Scotweb's customer service is probably getting tired of hearing from me, so it is good to get the information in a way that doesn't require me to be a nuisance. I don't think any of my own designs use more than a single "pro" colour, and the surcharge is not nearly as much as I imagined it would be.
I was also quite fond of your "Scenic Utah" design. Is that, by chance, one of the designs you're having woven?
Thanks again!

That is good to know. I would love to have the rights to my Tartan Designs back for the ones I really want. Half were just having fun designing things, but like the UTSA one for my school, it is not. Who know, perhaps I could get them to adopt it as theri official tartan!

Dear Cygnus, I'm glad you liked "Scenic Utah" - I'm sure that you are very proud of your beautiful state! It was just a design that I was playing around with - that's as far as it went. Please feel free to use it or change it as you see fit. The designs that I'm having woven are called "Rosalyn" and "Castlefield". You can find them in the Scottish Register of Tartans. They are supposed to be woven and sent out to me by mid- August. I can hardly wait!! The "Castlefield" is a personal tartan belonging to my husband and me. It was our 30th anniversary gift to each other. We are going to be using the 16 oz. fabric for furnishings in a small garden house/cottage that we are building ourselves. All the best...***Amble****

Hi, Carol – great designs. I have added them to my jpg collection under Canada.
