Very cool, why do these things never happen to me?
And how about a pic of the seersucker kilt?

So the pre-recording went pretty well yesterday. It will go on air tonight. I'll post a report after I hear it.

I've been browsing the forum for posts about dealing with the media regarding the wearing of the kilt. Hopefully this will be a good opportunity to educate a few people about the subject.
Some predictable questions:
1. Bagpipes
2. Underwear
3. Significance of tartans
I also plan to bring a spare kilt for the DJ to try on. Wish me luck!
Sounds pretty cool. Good luck!

This is the picture that started it all:

I was spotted at a popular ice cream place by a local DJ who later asked me on to his programme. It was a segment called 'The Martians Are Coming', featuring people with unusual interests. Some friends warned that it would be an on-air freakshow where I might be lampooned, but I decided I'd give it a go anyway.

This was what I wore to the interview recording. They also asked me to bring a few from my collection, so I brought my black AK, a locally made camouflage number and an SWK Black Watch, along with a spare belt and sporran.
The show is a Chinese language evening drive time programme, hosted by a male and female DJ team. The interview started with some banter between the two, then got into the meat of the subject: me, the kilted man.
Questions began on how I got into wearing the kilt. I explained that I discovered Utilikilts first, and was drawn into kilting in general, including tartan ones. Inevitably the question of undergarments came up, and I explained the origin of the myth, how Highland regiments were required to go underpantless on parade. For the general public however, no rule applied and people were free to wear or forego underwear as circumstances called for. I also told them that I never reveal my actual state to people.
There were also questions addressing the anxieties of men about wearing a skirt-like garment. I demonstrated sitting in a dignified and manly way, how the sporran helps to preserve modesty while seated, and how the kilt pin helps to keep the hem weighed down. From the 'ohhs' and 'ahhs', I think I managed to impart some understanding of kilt wearing and Scottish culture.
During the break, I got the male DJ into the SWK Black Watch with belt and sporran. That's him on the right:

He's taking some serious ribbing from his Facebook fans right now. I might have to go give him some support : )
Overall I think the interview went well. It was evenhanded and lighthearted. While there was a fair bit of giggling, the hosts came away with some understanding of kilt wearing. I'll never persuade the public to accept it right away, but it's a small, positive step.

Well done, Thoth!
I trust the DJ will live down the ribbing. Perhaps we will hear next that he has acquired a kilt and sporran of his own!
Keep us posted about any follow-up.

Mike

Hey Thoth,
Well done on your radio interview.
What tartan are you wearing in those photos? It looks great!
