Actually, unless one is wearing a Sheriffmuir doublet, a white waistcoat is de rigueur for wear with a regulation doublet or Prince Charlie coatee. When dressing for black tie there is more latitude, and both tartan and a variety of solid colours, as well as black, may be worn.

Thank you all for your replies! they are a great help, and put mi mind to rest. It seems I haven't been doing something so terribly wrong all these years!
If a formal event rears it's head, I'll take care to not mix things though.
Piperdbh,
If you PM me, I'll see what pics I can turn up. It wasn't at all unusual to see farmers working in ties and weskits though. To be honest, the only time I saw my grandfather without them, was when he was ill in bed!
Farm workers didn't wear ties, but wore usually white silk mufflers and weskits. Really that goes for all labourers though, in the early 1900's.
Jock,
I'll email you re the farming, as it's a bit OT maybe. but will say it'd be better if it didn't rain every other day!
I remember the red and yellow weskits well enough, Grandad had a red one, but he used to hunt. Mainly he wore tweeds. he worked a lot in tweed suits as well. It seemed to be some special gift to me,...slogging away in the summer in tweeds!
Same with the mufflers,...no matter how hot the day.
I'm thinking they don't make folks like they used to.
Thanks to all again!
Richard.

I have seen the photos of your son Stuart, Sandy, quite smart in his yellow waistcoat-he wears it well with the tweed jacket and kilt.
