This is my buddy Doc Dave:

I don't know what the tartan is, but I do know it was spun dyed and woven by these guys and gals:

Picture was taken a couple of years ago. My son, Alister, whom I am holding in the pic, just celebrated his third birthday a couple of days ago.

The kilt is a four yard box pleated kilt, though I have an additional yard of cloth tucked away, so I'm considering remaking this one as a five yard knife pleat.
Beautiful combo! The hose are amazing too- they just look fantastic all together!

    Cheers!

My Clan Donald kilt. Naturally dyed (cochineal, indigo & weld) and woven by yours truly.

My favorite kilt - c.1730 unnamed tartan from South Uist woven by me and made into a 5 yard box-pleat kilt by Bob Martin.

    Note the traditional herringbone selvedge.

In case anyone is wondering why it may look a little unusual, I forgot to mention, It's an asymmetric sett.

Thanks, Rex. You've got a real gem with Jamie's cloth there! That one is truly an heirloom!

Hope this isn't too tangential. Have always wondered if one of the local Navajo weavers could hand weave tartan for a kilt on their traditional looms.

Could be a mutually beneficial deal for the weaver and for those needing an uncommon tartan woven.

No. Navajo weaving produces basically a form of warp-faced rug type material. That type of loom setup would be wholely impractical for a traditional fine 2/2 twill.

    Peter, et. al.,

Besides yourself, who else currently handweaves tartan for sale?

    Cordially,

    David

David, not sure. There are those that weave for themselves and I've seen some really nice stuff. The real problem is that it's difficult to get the right yarn, especially in the US and then, it's a hard living that doesn't pay the bills.
