One way to respond:
"And you could do rather well with the men if you took her a$$ off your shoulders...... oh, did you not want to exchange fashion tips?

Sounds to me like she is intimidated by guys who are attractive to other women. Take it from over 30 years experience: kilts are like catnip to most women. Be yourself and care about your appearance. You'll attract the same type of woman.

in my experience of going on nights out in kilts women love them, the only negative comment i've ever had when out is off a friend of mine who i think actually didn't like the fact i was getting more attention then her, even my ex who is mean to me on principle torments me about the kilt publicly to keep up appearances and shortly after apologises in private or via text and tells me how much she likes it, if you're happy then be yourself, there are so many sheep in this world, why not stand out from the croud?

To each their own. Not everyone likes the same looks or fashions, and honestly that's fine. She doesn't like kilts, she doesn't have to (I won't automatically be attracted to a guy just because he's wearing one)... the problem is when they tell you what to do with your own look, especially if you didn't ask for their advice.
My fave line from another website I hang out on where we tend to be different than others and also get the "you should ____" thing about our looks:
"I'm not here to decorate your world."

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
