Question for the OP: what do you consider to be "cheap hose" in terms of dollars?

For a fellow who doesn't have any kilt hose at all, buying a couple of cheap pair of hose is not a bad idea. But you'll quickly realize that cheap hose just look and feel... cheap. You'll end up buying better hose in the not-too-distant future, so I wouldn't go overboard with it.

I can second a recommendation for What Price Glory. Their UK Khaki Full Hose are pretty comfortable and are 100% wool for $16. The thread around the top of the hose on the inside will probably rip when you put them on unless you are really gentle, but still, for the price I would say they are worth it...

I mostly want hose to casually wear with my utilikilts. I have a couple of pairs of knee socks, but no real hose. I wouldn't mind having a decent pair of hose to help "dress up" a kilts at times, but I don't think I would wear hose that often.

I have a pair from SockDreams and for the price I like them.
They are not heavy by any means, but they are patterned.
There are a few different styles if you search around there site.

Nobody has mentioned Hamilton Dry Goods. I have several pairs of their cotton kilt hose and am very satisfied. I had tried Brewin but did not do well with my big feet and large calves.

I've heard this before about about Brewin. While they're not the BEST hose in the world, I've got size 12.5E feet with 18" calves and their large 10-13UK fit me quite well.

I've also not had the problem of them going threadbare that I've heard others mention, but I've not worn them a TON yet.

For the money, I've been quite happy with my pairs, but I am still searching out exactly what I want for a REALLY nice pair of hose.

Gentlemen, if you'll allow me to continue this thread a little longer, I have a question about which hose material is best for the various seasons.

I'm new to kilt wearing. I also live in Texas where during the summer it’s unbearably hot and often times exceeds 100f for extended periods of time. The winters tend to be fairly comfortable with temperatures in the 75f to 85f range. I assume wool hose would be the most appropriate material for the winters but what about the summers? Cotton, a wool blend, something else? I prefer to wear boots with my kilt.

    Thank you for your assistance.

Cotton is usually pretty nice for really hot temps. Granted it doesn't get to those temps often in NY so I'm in wool for the most part.

Looks like I need to up the font on my posts. J/K BEEDEE.

edit: btw Hamilton Dry Goods has some pretty nice cotton hose.
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

I have both standard & premium hose from Sportkilt. If your legs are hairy, then the hair tends to come through on the standard but doesn't on the premium. Either way for the $ you pay they both seem to hold up. I only wore through one black pair of their standard hose in about 12 parades but that was w/wearing brogans not ghillie brogues

I have several pairs of the Brewin hose... They are OK but not great. They are rather thin and unimpressive. If you attempt to wear a sgian with Brewin hose you will look utterly ridiculous as the entire outline of the sgian is perfectly visible from top to bottom. I've tried it -- not cool.
