I like the way the cantle is cut out and the leather shows thru.

Very nice find, no matter what the "fur" or fur is.

Beautiful sporran, and I echo the "great deal" scentiments.
The fur, to my eye, looks a bit too long for seal, and a bit too short for rabbit or fox or one of the other typical "game" furs (badger, bobcat, skunk, etc..), although muscat or mink/ermine might be about the right length. Please let us know if you get it figured out.

Good deal!
Looks like a rabbit front to me, with maybe a synthetic border?

This just in from.....
Peggie MacLean
L&M Highland Outfitters (1997) Ltd.
"Thank you for the request for information. The sporran is likely seal skin, and would have been made between 1970 and 1991, when our numbering system changed.
Hope this helps - it could have been worn by an individual or a pipe band, but not a military regiment - it is a civilian dress sporran."
So, even happier with my find. I guess I'll keep browsing the weekly antique market more frequently, now.

Wow- There you have it. If it's seal, then you got well above and beyond a good deal, I should think. Congratulations!

Now that I am so pleased with this sporran, anyone here know how to clean or refurbish one?
This sporran , because it was in a box for a long time, has a stale, light musty odour. Any suggestions?
