As another 31 year old, let me say that getting into the dirt is still a joy...though spilled beer might be a close contender of stains of concern on a kilt.

OK, young-ins at 31. At 59, I get pretty dirty myself, especially while mountain biking. Fortunately, I do not do this activity kilted. My two boys might have a problem with the beer spillage, though!

I vote to let the "boys" decide which they prefer, even if they each choose a different one. I am assuming that the kilts will be a gift (a wonderful gift, indeed), but I would still let them make the choice.

I, too, would go with the darker rather than brighter. But... am I wrong that the second sample you showed was just a computer-generated sample from the STA? If so, I think that's just a representative display of the colours recorded. Whatever mill actually weaves the tartan would determine the actual shades? In which case, swatches may be in order!
Or I could be misconstruing everything

Lethearen, you are correct, the second link is of a computer generated image. A color swatch is in order. However, this project is going to have to be done quickly, as these are gifts, and hopefully for Christmas. If the material can be done quickly, and Dalgliesh said that it could, then I MIGHT get one by the 25th. Of course that depends on my kilt maker, Wally Catanach, too.
I'm thinking, at this point, of just not delaying this and will, more than likely, go with number 1.
Now, the question came up about having my boys decide. Hmm, I just might do that, too. Seeing how this was suppose to be a surprise, my wife and I will have to decide, and quickly, if they should be the ones to make the final decision, and heck with the surprise. Decisions, decisions!!!

If you had sent me #2 I'd have woven you #1. They are both the same thing and the former a respesentation, albeit not a very good one, of modern colours.
As an alternative why not go for #3 - Wilsons' colours.

I was all ready to vote #1 until I saw figheadair's option #3. That's the one I'd go with, myself.

I have to agree with Peter and lethearen. We are looking at the same tartan here, only image 1 is woven cloth and image 2 is a computer generated image. It's not really a good comparison.

Given that the "boys" are still "young", a question - do they still go for the bright "look at me" colors? If so then #2 but if they are more "conservative" then #2, going by the photos being actual representative color(s).
