many good suggestions already
I guess it depends largely on what you think a shirt should cost... I have some Paul Fredrick shirts and like them, though I find the laundry shrinks the collars more than some brands. Be sure to check their clearance pages. I have had good luck at Lands End Overstocks, but that has been over several years. At the moment, they seem to have two checked shirts in spread collars, neither of them terribly exciting. I believe Joseph Turner and Charles Tyrwhitt are the two new players on the English Shirt scene, each of them running a discount about as often as Joseph Bank. However, some of the more established names do run sales, especially at the end of the season- TM Lewin may be going after the discount market, too. But Tyrwhitt's idea of a sale is sometimes $50, which seems to be a lot. They have some lovely cotton and wool ones at just $70 each, which is said to be half off.
On the subject of Lands End more broadly, I have been very disappointed in their menswear offerings of late- not the quality, but the selection. They seem to have abandoned much of the suit business and most of their jackets are ready-aged, unconstructed, etc.
If you get really lucky, you might find a great red-and-blue tattersall from J Peterman in the world of vintage and N.O.S. It has a slight nap and comes in S-M-L, but does quite well with a tie.
Some take the high road and some take the low road. Who's in the gutter? MacLowlife

When mail order is your only choice...
For tattersal shirts (and shooting/kilt socks) go to: www.william-powell.co.uk excellent quality, wide choice of colours, and prices start at GBP 20 (about US $30).
Powell's has been in business since 1801, and I honestly doubt you will find better value for the money anywhere in the USA. Besides shirts they offer a full line of tweeds and outdoor clothing, as well as a range of shotguns and shooting accessories.
I shop there.

These shirts are fine for what they are cheap, functional and they sell like hot cakes here and it is no big deal if they get stained. What they often lack is quality of cloth, lack of room across the back, sleeves that rarely are long enough and the lacking of sensible length shirt tails. So be careful.
Quite right Jock. I have a wide array of tattersall and check style shirts that I wear with my Highland day attire. I prefer Brooks Brothers and Barbour for unsurpassed quality, color selection, collar/cuff selection, and how simply by how they are made. I hace never had any sort of problem with my shirts from either establishment, and the price is absolutely spot on! On average I typically pay around $80 for a shirt from Brooks Brothers or Barbour, which may sound expensive to some, but I have peace of mind that the shirt(s) will hold up for quite some time if properly taken care of.
Now, my formal shirts for Highland evening attire are entirely much more expensive, but that is another subject. I'd go with Brooks Brothers and Barbour. I haven't really seen the abundance of assorted styles and colors in the tattersall or check design at other establishments.

Hi David,
I have had a number of shirts from Cordings over the years. I can highly recommend them. You should also check the House of Bruar.
I tend to get most of my shirts from Harvie & Hudson on Jermyn Street... They have beautiful checked shirts!
Cheers,
Sandy

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the great leads. I'll look through these and likely place an order soon.
