I have to agree that the Randonnée Bretonne (Brittany Walking) is a beautiful kilt and one of my favorites. I wear it a lot. You'll not go far wrong if you get one.

Although I would not necessarily call it "rare", but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more Autumnal tartan than Cavan County by House of Edgar. Here are two photos from the board, the first one pleated to the sett, and the second one (at post #33) pleated to the tan line in the green block.

However, I think Figheadair is likely your best bet for ancient and relatively unknown tartans.
Good hunting!

Wait a minute! How could we overlook MAPLE LEAF! Speaking of autumnal...
Here is one, and here; but I've never seen a photo fully do it justice. Here it's paired with matching tartan hose!
See Barb's photo of Isle of Mull. Some of the House of Edgar Irish county tartans are nice.
I like the two Holyrood tartans (silver and gold) which have a lot of blue. I wonder if we'll get a diamond Holyrood in a couple of years? [They commemorate Queen Elizabeth's silver/golden jubilees, I believe]

Scott - my two cents worth - one of the oldest and rarely seen tartans -

I can't begin to count how many people stop me to ask what the tartan is.

Hope you've asked Kathy these questions too.
She's very knowledgeable about tartans and active in tartan focused groups. She's helped me find the right tartans for me just by giving her some idea of what I'm looking for. Not just the tartan, but the weight and mill, even having a special weave run.
Great suggestions above for sure. Just saying she's also a resource to include in your search for the perfect tartan.
Come to think of it, seems many of my hand sewn kilts are in unusual tartans.

For your refference, it's Batley's 16 oz. I liked their colors the best for the ML.

I'm gonna REALLY try and persuade you to go with "AULD SCOTLAND". This tartan is magical and seemingly shifts color dominance to its surroundings. the more i wear this, the more I just can't get enough of it. Here are detailed pics of my Box Pleated kilt in the tartan. Noot only do I get walk up compliments, but I've had people stop their cars and come up to ask about it!!
I've also spotted some new tartan on Ebay being sold for 27£ a yard single width. Its called Pride Of Scotland Autumn-

I remember Heatherfield, designed by Rex. I believe he made it public, but would have to be woven. So if you wanted something rare, that would fit the description.
