I think that the sword pilt pin has been 'done to death'.
Amen! My first kilt pin was a sword style, because that's what I saw everyone else wearing. Now I'm just plain sick of it. It's been overdone. I've changed to a simple 4" safety-pin (blanket pin) style. It's traditional and simple.

But I'd go for a round pin in an instant if I saw one I liked. They look pretty darn good, especially if they're worn a little higher up than usual. Like, say, at least halfway up the apron.

Any chance of giving some rough idea of the construction? Type of clay? Baking?

I am not advertizing these for sale- yet. But I probably will, in accordance with the rules for Artists and Craftsmen.

I think that I can make these kilt pins- handmade, one-at-a-time by me- for $35 to $49 depending on materials and settings.

Ha! Thanks Santa. I have been hiding them down here, on my kilt:

A few months ago, I wanted to make another kilt pin for myself, and I got the idea to do this technic. I was seeking metal, but lightweight at the same time. After all, experimentation has been a large part of my professional life. It worked very well.

Carol got wind of what I was doing (she occasionally makes "shop" checks) and wanted me to make her a shawl pin. I did, and she really liked it. So, I made 6 more shawl pins, and Matt and Ronan sold 3 of them at the Stone Mountain Games. I put some more shawl pins in a few yarn shops from Apalach to Clayton, and they have been well received.

Carol suggested that I make Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer pins, and other pins for Ms. Claus, and I think that is a great idea.

The clay that I used is of my own formulation, so forgive me if I don't say too much about it. It is my Red Hills Clay that I use to do my bird series of pendants (these pendants are 1.5 to 2 inches diameter, and some are set in copper or brass fabrications). After I got the clay to work the way I wanted it to, I was ready to work with various finishes. I started experimenting with powdered metal, and these prototypes slowly evolved:

Anyway, the clays are cleaned, weighed, mixed, shaped, dried, fired, metalized, heated, treated, washed, and rubbed. I might have left some steps out (). There is a solid brass safety pin on the back: a 2 inch safety pin for kilt pins, and a 2.5 inch safety pin for shawl pins.

Thank you all for your kind compliments and interest. Let me stop here as I do not mean to stray from the original posters subject. But, I have to say that I really am fond of round pins!

I, too, like the triskele pin---and tyger's pins!

To see a wide variety, check out some older threads:

Show us your favorite Kilt Pins
    Show us your Kilt Pins!

The tricky part about searching for those threads is that "kilt" can't be used as a search term---in this forum, it's too common to be worth indexing, who'd've thought? and words shorter than 4 letters aren't indexed. Remembering that the thread titles involved "show us," I searched for "show pins" and got the two hits in which I was interested.
