Lots of good advice above, Ron. There is nothing like Burning Man. Study the First Timers guide at www.burningman.com and drop me a pm if you want to chat.
I take my lighter weight UKs, and Stillwaters (and shorts and pants). I wouldn't want to bring anything I really cared about, as that corrosive alkaline dust is everywhere, and you become one with it. Of course any unbifucated garment (or none at all) goes in Black Rock City, so no worries. Keep in mind you are likely going to be doing a lot of walking and bicycle riding, so comfort is key.
This thread has my pics from 2009. 2011 will be my third burn, lets make plans to meet up there.
Best regards,

Looks like you found Waldo, but the fellow in the background lost his trousers!

From the pictures, you can see that masonpiper and Monkey@Arms practice the "Art of Khaki," that is, they are Black Rock City Rangers. Rangers are the folks who are NOT your mother, but more like the designated driver/mediation counselor/good-advice-givers. Be nice to the Rangers, they are the good guys of the burner community.

Khaki Klan
Thanks for the nice words Irish Jack, and it is always nice to see another member of the Khaki Klan around.
My post to the board right now is: anybody coming through Reno for BM or other reasons, drop a line and we will set up a kilted night out.

Why, oh why, is this some how intriguing to me? August in the middle of the black rock desert with 40,000 other folk sounds well like nothing I have ever done...Yet.
Ron, lots of good advice here. My first thought was a Stillwater that could be tossed at the end of the experience, but a Utility makes sense as well. I have washed mine enough that it has gotten that soft canvas feel, might be interesting to see what the playa dust does; my guess is it is kind of like the dust around the Bisiti badlands north and west of Chaco Canyon.
Love to see pics when you get back.

Well, Stillwater is out for me. Their one length fits most doesn't fit me. Pondering a UK Survival still, would have to buy it early to get it washed soft like you say.
Have seen many pics of the playa, guessing its close to the moonscape just over the line from me in Utah - only without the scrub.

And thanks for the Reno invite. Plans are to rendezvous in Salt Lake City and head west from there.

I'd wear my hemp RKilt if I was going there, to be sure. Always been intrigued, not ever been there. Looks like a feast for people watching and fun.

Totally agree with the Monkey. My wife and I went to Burning Man '95 and '96--her punk band played there. It's VERY dusty, and HOT. Dress for comfort and bring shade!
As an aside, BM ain't what it was back in the 90s. It's HUGE now. A zillion people and many of them morons. Alas. (I have friends who go every year with their art projects so I'm privy to the crowd assessment.)

[Clarification: It's definitely worth going. It'll be a blast, but expect the riff raff to tick you off now and again.]
