When you start wearing a kilt, you'll notice that you'll start meeting a TON of kilt experts (most all of which will be wearing p@nts); these people will know everything there is to know about the kilt and wearing it, be 100% accurate in everything they say, and often times will have never worn a kilt before.
Don't ever listen to those type of people, as they are the reason for the huge ammount of misinformation that circulates conserning the kilt. Hang around here, read the forums, ask plenty of questions, and you can't go wrong.
Welcome to Xmarks, from Atlanta GA.
The folks on here are the best you'll ever find, and the ammount of knowledge that they have to share is incredible.
P.S. My second kilt was in the NYC tartan; I got it after September 11th, as a nod to New York and because my dad was born there. I'm not a police officer. And I have never heard the one about blue tartans for police only. It's a pretty funny thought, I'd say. At any rate, it's a wonderful tartan, and because I don't have that kilt any more, I really miss wearing it.

I've heard a lot of weird notions that people have about kilts and tartans, but never that a blue tartan is only for the police. My clan tartan (Colquhoun) is also primarily blue.
I would really love to hear where this fellow got that idea. Can you ask him?

Oh, dear me!
Blue you say!
Why no, that color is reserved
... for who?
Well, well dear my dear man for the Sky......... and the sea,
the color of your dear lassies eyes,
for the Clarkes and the Clerics, the Paterson's too
I think the McDonalds and the Mac Dogeals and the Stewart's as well
Blue you say? Why no sir, not at all
Should you fine Law Enforcment Gents want a color your own
Why not Mauve or Puice, Perhaps Vermillion Green
But Blue you see has
Ah, been spoken for.
Wear the color of tartan you want; Blue or Green, Red Yellow or Pink, The important part is your wearing a Kilt, I think. ith:

I'd guess the Ramsay's would disagree too.

And don't tell the Bells (Bell of the Borders) or Clan Campbell either!
By that logic, the red ones are only for fire departments? Don't tell the Black Watch pipers about that one! (Or Clan Ross, Clan Scott, Clan Donald, ...)
I think probably the idea came from the pipe band world (most Police pipe bands wear blue-based tartan, most fire departments wear red-based, most Irish/Emerald Society wear either green-based or saffron, etc.).

I guess most of us are going to have to get new wardrobes.
As stated earlier, there are a lot of "experts" out there who will tell you you're in the wrong. Eventually someone will tell you you can't wear a tartan because it's not your clan...even though they have no clue who you are. My favorite so far was being told by a complete stranger that I couldn't wear a kilt because I'm not of Scottish ancestry(which I am).
Wear any color or tartan you want. There are tons of threads on here with great responses to all the "corrections" people will give you, and the really dumb questions they ask.
The grass is greener on the other side of the fence...and it's usually greenest right above the septic tank.
