In addition to cardio and weights, remember to perform exercises that strengthen your core muscles.

No offense to The Scot but after reviewing "The Four Hour Body" website and reading a bunch of reviews by medical professionals, I would suggest that anybody be VERY careful about following that book too closely.

It is marketed well. Absolutely. "Lots of research" basically means that Tim Ferris did a bunch of experimentation on himself. Fine...but Tim Ferris is a sample size of one, and just because Tim Ferris thinks he can exist just fine on four hours of sleep, for example, doesn't mean that's a good fitness regime for anybody else.

Look at Tim Ferris's own website and how he promotes his book.

An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman

Right. I think that pretty much sums it up.

There was an article on him and about his book in Wired a few months back.

I came away with from it with the DO NOT WANT flashing brightly.

Know nothing about caber, But used to be a serious racing cyclist well into my 40's so like to think I learned some thing about cardio.... Start easy, work upto a MAXIMUM of 2hours x3 a week in off season. For effort level get a heart monitor and follow instructions or work at the level where you can say phrases but struggle to finish a whole sentence whilst exercising. During season compete weekly + 2x LIGHT workouts only......Not just my opinion but fairly well accepted. Oh, and get as much rest as you can the rest of the time...

What should I bring with me to the games? things like sunscreen and sweat towels seem like they would be a must, but what else? do athletes wear kilt items before and after the games? like spporans, kilt pins, ETC.

    All advice is welcome
    Thanks and see you soon

Towels, sunscreen, water, snacks, extra T-shirt, etc etc etc My bag always includes these things plus Excedrine, sportcreme, ace bandages, 2 large camp chairs, a sun blind, (I'm old) gloves, tacky, athletic tape...I also use 2 different types of footwear, cleats and boots.

Some games provide food, water and sports drinks--other smaller games--you're on your own.

No worries if you've forgotten something---in my neck of the woods, we don't mind sharing. I usually even bring along an extra kilt. I never compete with a kilt pin attached--they get mashed. I take my sporran for before and after--so I have something to hold my wallet, keys, pipe/tobacco and cell phone.

As far as what you wear to and from the games--its up to you. I tend to be kilted the whole time, however some guys just wrap the kilt on for the competition, then wear athletic gear before and after. Either way, no biggy.

The ONE thing I never forget---the cooler! It is where I keep my homebrew and single malt If your a Master like me, you'll want to have a few good cigars on hand too to enjoy with the lads after the madness is over.

Please remember--I'm NOT a pro. I throw to have fun, enjoy the friendship of the lads and attack my personal records. Hence, the drinks and smokes.

Easy way to begin: pack what you'll need to be hydrated, fed and comfortable.
Remember: It will be a LONG day.

I'm setting up next you at the next MWC! LOL!

Back on topic, I always wear my clan kilt pin when competing. I've lost a number of them but it's part of being a clansman and a small price to pay. The sporran however remains in the sports bag. I also march with the Clans during the lunch hour if my clan is present. I don't remove my kilt until after the games when I'm standing outside my car in the parking lot. Some times I even wear it home.

I tell the young'uns that not only is it their right as Scotsmen to wear the kilt, it's their duty.

In parting, here's my rule about tossing the weight over the bar: Always drink a beer before the event starts. That's because it's usually contested after lunch and you have cooled down. The beer makes it hurts less.

Last year some friends gave me one of those collapsing, folding camp chairs. It had a couple of mold spots on it and the mrs. didn't want it any more. At that Games I started toting it around the field, always putting it a comfortable distance away from the trig, and MADE myself sit down between events. I'd get up and do 5-10 minutes of pulling tape so that I did my share, but aside from that, I was sitting down.

Wow. I set three PR's at that game and learned my lesson.

My bag has two pairs of shoes, sunscreen, two pairs of gloves. Athletic tape just in case, a spare bandana (I wear one on my head for sun protections) and a water bottle. I used to carry a little jar of tacky, as well. I don't actually use tacky any more, the latex-palmed gloves work well enough to help my grip and other guys invariably put tacky on the implements, so it's on there anyway.

I don't wear my sporran when I throw and I usually don't wear a big kilt belt. I made a smallish nylon web belt....webbing, a couple of black nylon fittings and some velcro. That's what I wear when I throw. The kilt pin, sporran and whatnot are all in my bag, so that once the events are over, I put it all back on again. I wear all the "stuff" at lunchtime as well.

About that beer at lunchtime thing.... more than one pro will have a beer at lunchtime. They say it helps you stay just a little bit more relaxed.

Thanks guys, that's the kind of information I am looking for. Guess I had better get busy in my brewery, if I should bring some of my home brew with me. Damn I knew I shouldn't have given up cigar's 2 years ago. Am ordering my first kilt next week, along with all that goes with it. First games is looking like Iron Thistle in OK city next month, then Arkansas Scottish Fest in April and then have sign-up for Whitchata Scottish fest in May, they have a beginner's master's class, looking forward to that 1. Might be the only chance I ever get to make it to the podoium.

    Cheers Mates, see ya soon
    Jamie
