In re: the machine -- I weeded out the collection before coming to Canada, getting down to my three favourite machines. I've mentioned two; the third is a Willcox & Gibbs chainstitch machine. They made them from 1865 to 1944, I think, and I don't think they changed the design much at all. It's a dinosaur and it's incredibly fun to watch it go.

I'm actually thinking about a new Janome treadle head. Comes with reverse and buttonhole and several specialty stitches. I've got a spare base kicking around for it.

I got confident, and I had other fabric -- a dangerous combination!

So I made a red one this morning...

You can guess I like bold colours!

I now know some of the areas where I need to pay particular attention on the next one.

Tess, if you can find 2.25-inch black grosgrain, I might have you get me some. I'm using two pieces of 1.5-inch grosgrain stitched together because it's the widest I can find here. Makes the edging a little funky.

I found and bought 1 1/2" navy blue grosgrain ribbon. I think they had it in black also.
I think there might be a "typo" in the directions. 1 1/2 " seems like a nice size to me for the clan badge area, another inch would seem huge don't you think?

He recommends the 2.25 inch ribbon for the cockade. I can see that with a full-size cap badge (see my red one) you might want the larger size. I "made do" with 1.5 inch ribbon and the clan cap badge on the red one seems a little cramped to me. The US Lighthouse Service crest on the black one is smaller, and oddly looks too small because I expect to see something the size of a cap badge there.

It's all perception, I guess. Use what you can find.

I was thinking that using two lengths of 1.5 inch for the edging was really wider than using the 2.25 inch as the pattern calls for. Not so much, once I do the math: 1.5 twice is 3.0, but less two .25 inch seam allowances is 2.5 inches. Not a significant difference.

One thing I will need to pay very close attention to when pinning edging is that the inside and outside edges match around the band, so I can sew right up to the edge. Should have been thinking about that and wasn't.

Outside of some little bobbles, pretty simple. Except that some idiot at the factory put the points on the wrong end of some of my pins.

I have a friend who talks of products made from "unobtainium". It appears with your skills, you don't have to worry about that. Good job. (And about the lighthouse service, I've had some experience with remote controlled fog signals along the inside passage. Suffice it to say I'm not convinced)
