Now only if my medical insurance provider would either pay for the daily intake of Guinness or, at least, reimbursement me for the cost....

After reading that, I felt inclined to take two and call in the morning.

It's also lower in calories than the typical beer (so I've heard, but not verified).

Huh -- never thought to check that out, but found one site reporting 170 cal/5.7g carb in 16oz which translates to 128/4.3 per 12oz (rounded). Compared to the list here (which doesn't include Guinness, for some reason), that falls close to the traditional American "light" beers in cals, slightly less in carbs. Not as low as the uber-low 55, 64, etc. but who drinks any of that p!ss anyway LOL
Thanks for the tip, once I'm back off the wagon (so to speak) that makes the occasional brew more accessible!

If it's a blood thinner then there must be a lot of severe bleeders in Ireland....

I've got a big backpacking trip coming up (I will be kilted, of course), and I was thinking I might take along a bottle of some type of ale in my pack for a "pick-me-up" when I make camp in the evening.
After reading this thread, I've decided it will be a Guinness. Even if it's not the best restorative in the world, I have no doubts it will indeed lift my spirits and make me feel better after a full day of hard hiking.
