In 1992 we were trained in what now has become WMD, secondary devices, etc..and were told that we were likely to be wiped out as the first response. All of this is nothing new, and we looked around at each other wondering if this did go down who would be the poor fellow(s) that would become victims. Last guy we investigated got 2 years and $450,000 dollars in restitution he would have to pay back for a fire cracker. There is little tolerance for this sort of things nowdays and even the weakest DA will prosecute to the fullest of the law. Something to impress upon those who may consider this tomfoolery.

Back in the period when my work office was near a mega-mega mall in downtown Ottawa, what must have been a similar bleach bomb went off in the mall's food court, detonated when someone opened the lid of an empty-your-tray disposal bin. Such is the power of money that almost no publicity resulted, I mean outside the various nearby government offices. Could have been a good thing since there was no repeat performance- but on the other hand you had to wonder if public safety was being ignored in the interest of shopping and the happy result merely an accidental byproduct.

Most people are blissfully unaware of how much terrorism is written off as simple crime/teenage pranks gone too far, or in many cases the threat isn't carried out, because if people knew, the terrorists would win. Keep in mind that a terrorist's goal isn't to cause death/destruction. It is to cause fear.

Made these all the time as a teen/preteen. Used to make them and stuff them in mailboxes. I know, I know, I was a hooligan.

Someone needs to tell you that "hooligan" doesn't even begin to cover it. I kinda think you may need help.

Indeed, it's not something I'd be boasting of on this forum, especially given:
a) the average age of members (not that we're all curmudgeons here, but most are well past their teen years)
b) the number of servicemen & servicewomen (and veterans) present who would have zero tolerance for such shenanigans
c) the number of members who are, or were in law enforcement
d) given the sheer number of members on XMarks, I can almost guarantee that you'll find a number of active members whose mailboxes have been vandalized by such idiocy, and see absolutely NO humour in this whatsoever... (Mailboxes are bloody expensive!)

I'm not saying that those who indulged in "let's do this" with buddies in a vacant field [OUT OF THE WAY] somewhere is anything outlandish.
However, kids today are now doing this to hurt people on PURPOSE. These can be made in such a way that the device will not detonate until the VICTIM moves it. That is malicious intent. Depending on the size of the device/quantities of ingredients, depends on how "big" the bang will be.
Ladyfingers barely move enough dirt to close a common ant hill. Silver Dollars on the other hand, will make a hole in dirt big enough for a small dog to sit in.
