I haven't tried that one (yet) so can't comment on it. I do still have one of the "Mini-Culloden" sgians, and really wish they hadn't discontinued it. Takes and holds a wicked edge, and happens to be a good thrower as well.

I thought I'd seen a sgian dubh by Cold Steel, but when I went back to the store they thought I was crazy. I mean in the sense of 'totally mistaken', not in the sense of 'too dangerous to sell a knife to'. I think.

Damn their eyes! They discontinued the Mini Culloden...I've wanted one for a while...they could do a re-issue...Mini Culloden II. anybody? I looks/looked like a very nice practical sgian.

The only current model that CS has now is the Braveheart, which is the model I have. It is a modern version of the sgian dubh.
It is very functional but the sheath is not really for wearing in hose, it has a clip like you would see on a boot knife. It also has a non-slip handle that is more functional and has none of the traditional look that you might want for carry dressed in a kilt.

The clip is removable. They also have the "Scottish Spike" a slightly shorter, more slender version. They are coming out with what looks a lot like a folding sgian with a clip, called the Holdout series but they are on back order. None of these are decorative, they are practical, working knives.
I have several ColdSteel knives including the Braveheart and Scottish Spike. I collect working knives as a hobby, and all the ColdSteel knives are excellent knives.

Thanks for the information about the clip Geoff,
I never really looked that close but the clip does come off. I've had this knife for a couple of years and never checked it that closely. It means I can carry it without worry in my hose.

The swordforum.com boards have a lot of reviews of the Cold Steel stuff. Reportedly, the swords are OK in quality, but heavy. Dale Seago has reviewed the dirk in detail. Their stuff is generally good...but there's better out there. I've got a sword from Armour Class in the UK, and it is quite impressive. And reasonably priced for the quality.

Well where can we find better quality pieces out there. I continually find middle of the road or scrap quality and the occasional piece that I could easily pay for a car faster. I do not think I need to buy and collect museum quality but something not congured from a scrapped boat would be nice.

I'd recommend Armour Class for both "historically accurate" broadswords and dirks at reasonable cost.

***. Armour Class can have a bit of a wait, but the workmanship is good and the price quite reasonable for what you get.
