I have been thinking about some general guidelines for evaluating a non-standard “Look”.

You seem to have the attitude “my wife made me this amazing sweater and I love it.” Attitude will carry you a long way.

Another plus is the length. It appears to be at your hip line and about the same length as the arms. If you need a little more room for a sporran you can hike the bottom of the sweater up a bit.

A kilt will flair out and balance out the visual weight of the sweater. The balance can be further enhanced with a nice pair of hose and shoes.

So overall I would say you have the beginnings of a great look!

It is great. Is it wool? If it is then washings will change it a little. I have some that my mum made that, despite my putting on a few pounds, have become smaller. If it is wool then enjoy it as it is, wash it carefully when it needs it, and it will conform to your shape in time. The look is good. Casual. The fact that she made it for you is great. Congratulations to you and to her. I hope to one day do as well.

That is a fabulous sweater. All it needs to finish off the look is a nice pipe and a coracle on the North Atlantic.

    Color me jealous.

Tulloch: Yes it's 100% blue faced leicester. I agree it's a size too large. We're going to wash it and see how it goes but either way I'm going to happily wear it when the temps drop cause it's so comfortable and warm. Thanks guys for the great comments - big help! The master craftsmen of all things wool will be chiming in shortly.

Thank you all for your kind comments about Tom's sweater.
It was a labor of love! We talked about it (debated the Boyfriend Curse...then we got married so that became a non-issue) then decided on the pattern. It's a Drops pattern, fairly straightforward if you're experienced with cables and such. Took me a while to get it finished because I am not exactly fast when it comes to knitting...and I did spin the yarn for it as well. That takes time-a little over 2 years from sheep to Aran. I have enough fiber left to spin some sock yarn for a matching pair of kilt hose. I think he looks very handsome in his sweater and I think once it has been washed it should block out nicely and will hopefully full a little bit and tighten up. It's going to take a week to dry the thing-it weighs 5 pounds!!!
Thanks again! We'll post a photo of Tom in the full kit as soon as it becomes reality!

My Aran sweater fits the same way and I love it. The extra wool makes it warmer and more comfortable.

I've seen people wear Aran sweaters that are more fitted, but the thickness of the wool combined with the cabling doesn't lend itself to that look. The result is sort of... lumpy.

It looks great, That is a labour of love and such a thoughtful gift. I think the oversized sweater is a good look and from my experience with new ones is that they settle down over time and find their own drape. it looks darn comfy!

I have a John Malloy Aran sweater and it fits much the same way!

Ye should just sit back with that flat cap on, drink some Guinness, and suren enough twill fit over time! ;)
