I still have 90% of the wool blanket left, so I may make another for the cold and rainy season. Felt a large piece of the wool, then cut out the patterns. This way it is preshrunk. I might as well throw some dye into the mix too.

That's exactly what I would do. And if you have plenty of fabric and want a serious bonnet with plenty of body, run the fabric through the hot/cold cycle a couple or three times, followed by a tour of duty in the dryer. I imagine you'll be quite happy with the results.
