I walked around all day, yesterday, envisioning how great I would look in that wonderful tartan. :-) Thus, the Douglas-Black-Modern is now my 2nd choice.

Please sell Jeff and others all the Douglas, Black they want. I can't wait to see the photos of Jeff wrapped from head to toe, like a mummy, in furlongs of that beautiful tartan. ;-)
Thanks Mook. Unfortunately the photo of the tartan they are calling Douglas Modern Black does not match up with the STA 1029 version, instead having white stripes where the red is supposed to be, and thus looking much more like a simple off color Douglas with black instead of blue, and aqua instead of green. Asking them to recheck the actual tartan for its appearence---red or white stripe--before finalizing any decision. Will keep you posted.

Glad you are happy with your Macleod choice---can't wait to see pictures.

I went in the shop today and got all sized up and ordered a MacLeod of Harris Hunting Casual kilt also. The Tartan looks sharp. Can't wait... Although my wife can certainly wait... lol. Since I've been on a Kilt buying binge lately. A traditional 8yrd in the Nova Scotia tartan by B&S, and now a MacLeod casual from B&S (both 16oz).

She'll be happy if I never go back to the store lol! (thank god for shopping at the website >.> )

More communication with Brandon today---I was right, this is Lochcarron's version of Douglas Modern Black (aqua and black with the thin white stripe---simply a color variation of regular Douglas) than the STA 1029 version (green and black background with the white stripe replaced with a red one) which is what I wanted. Not that it is not a beautiful tartan, but it is not what I wanted, so I will have to await other opportunities.

Jeff: I find it interesting/puzzling that Lochcarron, or any mill, would weave a color variation of a tartan (Douglas, in this case) and give it the name of another tartan (Douglas, Black) with a different thread count. To me that spells C-O-N-F-U-S-I-O-N. Is that unprecedented? Am I missing something?

That's even worse than red being orange and purple being blue! ;-)

PS: On a tangential note, Kathy Lare just finished a Douglas (WCWM) kilt and plaid for my son, Joe. The tartan was woven by Dalgliesh. Joe is on travel, so we haven't seen it, yet. We'll drive down to Kathy's and pick it up on Friday, and will post pictures ASAP.

    Brandon,

If you could PM or email me with an estimated cost for either 4 meters of DW or 8 meters of SW tartan, or for an 8yd traditional knife pleated kilt from the STA 1029 Dalgleish Douglas Modern Black, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks JF

Thor271: Two kilts - congratulations! Post a pic of the MacLeod and I'll do the same. And, my condolences to your wife. They just don't understand. I mean, how could anyone turn down a sale on those casuals at B&S?! I empathize with you, though.

Yesterday, purely coincidentally, and unfortunately, three packages came to our house - one from FedEx, one from USPS, and one from DHS. They all were for me and contained Scottish attire, and what's worse is my wife met them all at the door! It just wasn't my day. I'm in the dog house now ...

By the way, welcome to the blog. It seems you joined like I did - just started posting rather than using a "newbie" post. I didn't realize they were desired/requested. My bad, but I'm a little slow on the uptake.

I just saw your Afghan tartan post. Thanks for serving for us. We appreciate your sacrifice. I hope you get that Afghan kilt. You can wear it with more meaning than most of us can wear ours. Don't forget to post pictures. :-)

After a couple of email exchanges and one phone call, a kilt length of 16oz Lochcarron 'MacMillan Old Modern' will soon be in the mail to a lovely and talented kilt maker in New York! It will round out my MacMillan clan tartan kilt collection (Hunting Modern, Hunting Weathered, Old Weathered and now Old Modern).

Thanks to Brandon, and to Burnetts and Struth for this offering!

    Best Regards,
    Brooke

Brooke: It appears you nicely filled a gap in your stable of kilts. Congratulations.

If you will, explain something to me. I could not find the "MOM" on either the STA or SRT web sites, but B&S had it on their list, of course, and Linda Clifford has a nice picture of it at

    http://www.lindaclifford.com/MacMillan.html

How is the MOM officially identified?

    John (mookien)

PS: Sounds like you're an "easy" customer. I gave Brandon and B&S so much trouble that they told me if I emailed or called them one more time, they would charge me a nuisance fee. ;-)

    Mom

    John,

I believe it is just a color variation of #2025 "MacMillan (clan)" which has an also known name on the STA of "...Old Ancient" . I believe the MOM (I like that acronym as this is quite often the MacMillan variant people think of when they think of a MacMillan Tartan, the mother of MacMillans so to speak ) is essentially the same sett but in the Modern colors.

Matt, or Peter, or one of my more knowledgeable kinsman may have a better understanding of it though.

Thanks for asking. And yes, the people at Burnetts and Struth made me fax them proof that I was not you using a disguised voice before they would sell me the tartan!.
