Welcome from California
I am in a somewhat similar situation. There were precursors to the name McElmurry in Lewis, Harris, Ulster and the Isle of Mann. I will likely never be able to trace my McElmurrys back to their original lands. I will probably join Clan Morrison and wear their tartan and perhaps wear Ulster in recognition of my Scots-Irish ancestors and the possibility McElmurry originated in Ulster.
So, I have decided it is appropriate for me to recognize both my Scottish and Ulster heritage and that the two are not incompatible. You have to decide what makes sense for you.

Hi, Sean, and welcome to X Marks from the bottom end of Africa.
There is a wide range of tartan (or plain-coloured kilt) to choose from. Have a good look at what is there, and make a choice (or at least a first choice – you can always go back for more!).
While I am not of Irish descent, I very much like Ulster Red, All Ireland Red, All Ireland Blue and All Ireland Green. You might find them to your taste.
Regards,
Mike

A warm Scottish welcome from middle England. It has already been said: wear what you like. Wear it with pride and style.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Wow! Thanks to all for the warm welcome. I will make an attempt to respond to you all in one run-on sentence. As a person with grandparents from both sides of the Irish border, I have a great choice of Irish kilts and seem to be limited only by $ and time. Re what I now take as a thumbs up on the Scottish side, given the nature of clans and appropriate tartans, I did not wish to offend, so I when the time is right and the $ is in hand, I will order a MacQueen and wear it with pride. I'll even hit a Scottish festival when I can. Until then, I'll go with my Irish National and the UK survivor. Carroll County - drive through there every day so maybe we can organize a local kilt night. I grew up in New England and I'll be wearing the kilt on my next trip to Boston and will have a pint or twore at the Squealing Pig. Will be in Texas soon but not sure how close Carrolton is to San Antonio. Spent much time living in the UK, traveling through Scotland, England and Wales; can't wait to return. Enough for now and my brother-in-law just arrived from Florida so I must go welcome him. Regards to all.
