As Matty Ross mentioned, Stillwater Kilts offers a very affordable wool in what they describe as 'Black Shadow Tartan.' I have included the best image I have been able to get from it. It's actually really neat.

I can't say for sure, but it looks an awful lot like the Black Shadow tartan offered in 16oz wool from Marton Mills' Jura range.

There's a nice one called "Black country". I tried to link a photo but it did'nt work so if you go to the tartan feret and enter "Black country" you can see it. It's quite striking.

I completed a kilt in it just a few months ago, the client had the back pleated to the yellow stripe, so a very eye catching result.

Obviously Black Stewart comes to mind, and the Shepherd Check. Can anyone suggest others?
I also have hunted for black tartans, and was lucky to discover the Scotweb tartan finder has a colour feature.

    Go to http://www.scotweb.co.uk/tartandesign/
Under the banner, in the middle is a button Search by Colour
Click it and a colour feature appears to the left.
If you put 'black' as the only colour in the first two spaces, you will be shown mainly black/dark tartans.

You can experiment with different colours to bring up different combinations.

    Good Luck
