I read a wonderful report on a wedding, many many moons ago that went something like this:
The groom wore a black dinner jacket with shawl collar and its matching tie in glistening black satin. The tie was of the au-courant style with larger loops on the bow and extended bottom corners. His shoes were a patent leather that glistened behind the conservative golden buckle, slightly off-centre as in the most modish style. The de-rigeur satin stripe on his trousers was wide and of the same materials and sheen as his collar and tie, and they were un-cuffed and slightly flaired.
The bride wore the traditional white.

Because that's the tradition on this continent, Jock. Most grooms that I have seen on this bank of the Pond wear something that's a little different from the groomsmen. How, where and why it started, I don't know, but as I think you've said before, "That's just the way it's done."

I love it!
I can just imagine the same sort of report from an Xmaker's wedding! Just think of the detail we could go to, tartan hue, hose colour, shirt, tie, jacket, tweed, barathea, sporran, shoes, bonnet -------on second thoughts, perhaps we had better not go there.

Sounds like your groomsmen may know already, but I used this video to aid mine in preperation because I didn't want to have to do it the day before haha.

Also, for my upcoming wedding in January, I will be diferent than my groomsmen in a few different ways, take or leave what you like: I will be in Gunn, they will be in Black Watch. I will have red hose (gotta give out my shout to davidLpope for the hose! ), they will be in black, don't forget you will have your plaid and they will not (unless you opted out of that, I did not).
I am in the same boat in regards to the bride standing out, I think I will stand out enough to where I don't just blend with my EIGHT groomsmen, but not so much that I take away from her. Let me know what ya think brotha.
Also.... CONGRATS!

So far I am loving all the ideas and the advice. I think I'm getting closer to making up my mind on how I'd like my half of the wedding party to look.
Someone asked if the groomsmen will be renting or buying... my best man and one of the groomsmen is buying the kilt for sure, not sure about the jacket and other stuff though. I will probably rent all the jackets and such from the same place so as to have some uniformity.
I'll probably have them all in the same color hose and tie, and I'll pick a color for myself that compliments both them and my tartan (Murray of Atholl, Modern).
As far as the jacket and vest, or not (due to being outside and warm weather)... I'll wear a jacket and have the groomsmen in waist coats.
Anyone know of rental places around Southern California with good history? I'll need kilt rentals, shirts, vests, shoes, hose, flashes, sporrans, and belts.

Aye, indeed what better accessory could one ask for than a beautiful white-clad lady. He shouldn't do anything he or the bride doesn't feel comfortable doing. But he "could" make himself stand-out as the groom, if he feels like it.

Great, but a genuine "don't" here...
Don't rent shoes! (your feet will disown you!). Wear what ever nice polished black shoes you have. Also, you don't need to rent belts- in the case of wearing a waistcoat, the belts are best not worn. (Just not done, too long to go into here...)
Cheers,
Michael

Good piece of advice... and I should have rephrased this... I'll be buying all my stuff... I'll need to point the groomsmen in the right direction for renting their outfits.

First congrats on your wedding!
Second, I know the exact situation you are in as I my self will be having a kilted wedding in June of 2012! although mine will be in Massachusetts.
For myself I am buying a MacPherson dress kilt and the groomsmen will all be renting black watch. its an evening wedding so we will be wearing the prince charlies. to give myself and my best man a bit of distinguished look from the others we will both be wearing fly plaids, mine in the same MacPherson dress and his in black watch.
so just some input on what i will be doing for mine. i am also encouraging all male attendees to wear kilts if they feel so inclined, so i could have as many people as possible 'dressed to kilt'
