    Ok, thanks for the advice and clarification.

    I'll look at getting a 5yd for general use, may be even for some scout events. Just need to decide on which tartan...

    I know that the stores obviously want to get sales, but they don't always make it easy for those of us who are new to buying our kit.

    In my opinion, the amount of cloth used to make the kilt has nothing at all to do with whether the kilt is suitable for casual or formal wear.

    In fact, to me, the hallmark of a good kilt is that it can equally serve both purposes, provided the appropriate accessories. If a kilt is well made, from quality cloth, then it will look good for both casual and formal attire.
