I've often browsed through the women's plaid skirts at thrift stores hoping one day to find a lovely man's kilt. (That's where a kilt would end up, for sure.)
I do get strange looks...
I did, many years ago, find a lovely tartan floorlength skirt, from Lochcarron, at a thrift store, which my girlfriend at that time bought and wore to formal functions.

What a bargain! Very nice.
I did go into a charity shop in Wick, Caithness and looked at the lines of tartan skirts. I mentioned to the staff that I was looking to see if there were any mens kilts. She said they rarely get mens kilts in but would let me know if I give them my telephone number. That was 2 years ago. Never heard from them but have called in recently and got the same answer. Mens kilts of quality are probably passed down to sons etc.
Chris.

I believe Kiltedwolfman has found men's kilts in the women's section and slohairt has found large size, heavyweight women's tartan skirts with enough material to make a 4 yard men's kilt out of.
Last summer, I found a girl's skirt in heavyweight wool done up in the Alberta provincial tartan. There wasn't much material in it, but enough at least for my mother to have a sash and bit left over to someday make a waistcoat from.
Last week, I found a pair of dress ghillie brogues that I'm in the process of customizing with buckles:http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...ization-67462/

I've done that several times, and I get the looks too... but I've never found anything

I often look through the ladies purse section at our Value Village, as I'm hoping someday to find a sporran accidentally misfiled...

My sister found a wool kilt at the thrift store that her husband is known to wear upon occasion. No makers marks on it and it is a lighter weight wool... Think she paid about USD$10 for it or so...
My Lady found a utilikilt at the thrift store that looked like it was never worn for $10. Although it was too large for me, I was able to find it a good home here on Xmarks in trade for a neat sock decoration.

What he said.
Some of you guys are really fortunate. Out here, in the middle of nowhere, I'm lucky to find shirts and jackets that will work for me--kilts and brogues aren't even in the realm of possibility. I did find a pair of kilt hose at a Goodwill on my last trip to Denver...in good shape but they were in a color I'd never find a use for.
Luck dogs!!
The grass is greener on the other side of the fence...and it's usually greenest right above the septic tank.

That's a great find! I'm always checking our local sites around here. I have found a few Harris Tweeds but nothing yet for my kilt.
