    This is but the latest example of people wanting to assign some kind of meaning to the dicing seen on some bonnets. Let me just reiterate here that I have never, NEVER, come across any historical indication that there was any significance whatever to the dicing other than simple ornamentation.

    pei Mac Donald Asked a few of the locals about diced caps. No one thought there was any meaning to dicing. One chap said he thought it was bands or military that wore diced caps and civilians not but was probably wrong.

    Dicing in the military

    In British Army pipe and drum bands, I do know, the pipers wear plain and the drummers wear diced. I'm not sure about non-musician soldiers, though.
