Had to chime in
This thread is interesting because My Father's name was John, my name is Iain and my baby boy is named Sean.......I guess we like this name and variants in our family :-)

Well, reason I ask is because my middle name is Ian and my brother's name is Sean...we're more alike than we think.

A friend named his two sons Ian and Evan, fully knowing that they were Gaelic and Welsh variants of the same name.
Then you have
Joseph/Jose/Josef/Josip/Giuseppe/Seosmh
and
Stephen/Etienne/Esteban/Stepan/Istvan/Stiobhan.
And last names like
Smith/Ferrier/Herrero/Ferraro/Schmidt/Smit/Kovacs/Kowalczyk/Haddad/Kusnetzov/Gow.

As a fellow Ian, I'll put my two cents in...
Latin does not have a "J" character and typical pronunciation of the letter "A" is long. So if I wanted to write John with my hammer and chisel as it is pronounced, I would spell it IAN.

Just remember... English wasn't the first language in the world. While a name might have an English equivalent- it doesn't mean that the English is the original version of that particular name. Simple as that
